The Canadian Club
fonds
1907-1982
26 cm of textual records
Administrative history
The Canadian Club movement began in 1893 in Hamilton
as an effort to inspire interest of Canadians in
their own country through the study of the history,
literature and resources of Canada and the fostering
of "a patriotic Canadian sentiment". Fort William and
Port Arthur both had Canadian Clubs in the early
years of the twentieth century, but they gradually
disappeared. The Fort William Women's Canadian Club
was in existence, however, as late as 1969. In August
of 1969 the Thunder Bay Canadian Club was organized.
The primary activity of the Thunder Bay Canadian Club
was to sponsor lectures by prominent Canadian and
visitors from other countries on national or
international issues. Currently the club is inactive,
its last meeting was held in 1986. The Canadian Club
of Fort William was organized late in 1907 primarily
by Mr. Sheldon M. Fisher. The Women's Canadian Club
of Fort William was organized in June of 1909.
