Fort William Caledonian

Administrative history
The Fort William Caledonian Society was inaugurated
on 31 Jan. 1917, and was the first of its kind in
Fort William. Its objectives were "the encouragement
and practice of Scottish customs; the cultivation of
a taste for Scottish History, Poetry, and Song and to
unite more closely Scotchmen and those of Scottish
descent". Only those of Scottish birth or descent, or
those married to such, were eligible for membership.
The society also addressed applications for relief to
needy members and supported or sponsored social and
cultural events. The organization originated in 1917
in response to a request by the Burns Supper
Committee and Supporters and was preceded by a
Caledonian Society in Port Arthur.
Scope and Content
The Fort William Caledonian Society records is
composed of minutes, a constitution, and by-laws,
regarding the meetings and rules of the society.

Minutes, including an inaugural meeting contained in
a black scribbler. There is also one loose poem.

The constitution and by-laws, 1931 in two bound
copies with four pages each.

Fort William Little Theatre

Administrative history
The Fort William Little Theatre was formed in March
of 1954 from the amalgamation of the Fort William
Guild Players and the Orpheus Light Opera Society.
The latter was founded in 1952 by Mr. Joseph G. Rollo
to provide light musicals in Fort William. It was
also intended to operate as a theatre school giving
instruction in acting and voice. The origins of the
Fort William Guild Players is unknown. The Orpheus
Light Opera Society produced light musicals while the
guild players and Fort William Little Theatre
primarily produced short one-act plays.

Minutes, programs, correspondence, and scripts
dealing with the preparation and carrying out of
performances, as well as the business of and
memberships in the theatre.

1954-1963
Minutes of the Fort William Little Theatre from
1954-1963. They include a constitution from April 8,
1954, and a membership list probably of the Orpheus
Light Opera Society. Some are incomplete.

chronologically.

Fort William Loyal Temperance

Administrative history
The Fort William Loyal Temperance Union was formed in
the late 19th century to encourage the
non-consumption of alcohol in Fort William and the
passage of legislation banning alcohol. The "Band of
Hope", as they were known, met approximately every
two weeks for songs, lectures, regular lessons and
recitations, as well as regular business. Attendance
averaged approximately 35 people. Collections
averaged twenty cents per meeting. The President of
the union was Lillie Darwin and the Treasurer was
Willie Ward. May Deacon was Secretary until 26 Mar.
1897, and Sadie Tonkin was Secretary from 9 Apr.
1897.

book
Minutes of the meeting of the Fort William "Band of
Hope", from 17 Oct. 1896 to 28 May 1897. A major
portion of the book is missing. The latter portion of
the book has been filled with cooking recipes.

Fort William Police Protective

Administrative history
The Fort William Police Protective Association was formed in
Nov. 1946 for the purpose of applying to the Trades and
Labor Congress of Canada to form a union. The organization
sought to act as a bargaining unit in negotiations with
the City of Fort William. In April 1947 the association was
transformed into the Fort William Police Association for
the same purposes. It amalgamated with the Fort William
Police Athletic Club in 1950. (see E 60)

Fort William Police Athletic Club/
Fort William Police Association

Administrative history
The Fort William Police Athletic Club was formed in
Jan. 1925 and open to all members of the force. It was
organized to promote athletics and physical exercise, and
to cater to the social and entertainment needs of its
members. Committees included finance, relief and sick
(also known as sick and visiting), athletics and entertainment.
The club also ran the Fort William Police Benevolent Fund.
In May of 1950 the club amalgamated with the Fort William
Police Association to become the Fort William Police Athletic
Association (a name changed to Fort William Police Association
in Oct. 1950). After this, its focus changed from athletics and entertainment
to negotiating better working conditions and rates of pay.

Administrative history
The Fort William Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals was formed on 5 May 1914 with 27
members, originally. It amalgamated with its Port
Arthur counterpart in 1922 to form the Thunder Bay
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Society's first cash book - a continuous record
of its income and expenditures from its inception,
May 1914 to 13 July 1922. 13 of the 194 pages are
used.

The Fort William Patriotic
Society fonds

Administrative history
The Fort William Patriotic Society was formed by a
group of leading citizens in Sept. 1914 to distribute
funds raised locally for the relief of wives and
families of men at the front. Unlike its sister
organization in Port Arthur, the Fort William
Patriotic Society did not become a branch of the
federal Canadian Patriotic Fund. After the war,
however, the society agreed to administer the Post
Discharge Relief Fund on behalf of the Canadian
Patriotic Fund. The Fort William Patriotic Society
was incorporated in Feb. 1918. Although the society
continued to meet until May 1920 to distribute Post
Discharge Relief, the patriotic fund was formally
closed in Feb. 1920, when a final financial statement
was released. W.W. O'Brien and J.T. Horne were the
society's principle officers throughout its five-year
life.
Scope and Content
The Fort William Patriotic Society Records is a
collection of minute books, scrapbooks, financial
statements, certificates and policies regarding the
meetings, activities, financial concerns, and
objectives of the society. All are listed in
chronological order.

9 cm. - 1914-1920
1) Minutes of the society's meetings from 24 Sept.
1914 (initial meeting), to 15 Mar. 1916. Minutes can
be found on pages 29-49, 117-209. The remainder of
the minute book contains scrapbook clippings.
2) Minutes of the society's meeting from 6 Dec. 1916
to 25 May 1920. The remainder of the minute book is
unused.

cm. - 1914-1920
A scrapbook of clippings from Nov. 1917-May 1920,
primarily from the Times-Journal newspaper.
The clippings follow the activities of the Fort
William Patriotic Society, the Canadian Patriotic
Fund (federal organization), and the war-time
experiences of Fort William residents, including
local casualty lists. After Nov. 1919, clippings
relate to the distribution of Post Discharge Relief.

Friends of White Otter Castle

Administrative history
The Friends of White Otter Castle is a group formed
to encourage the restoration and preservation of
White Otter Castle, a building constructed by Jimmy
McOuat in the early years of the 20th
century on White Otter Lake near Ignace, Ontario. The
group is composed of individuals such as Brian S.
Thom, the Maintenance Superintendent of Old Fort
William Historic Park and author of the following
report, and groups such as the Atikokan "Sno-Ho
Club".
Scope and content
Series E 2/1/1. - Report
A report entitled "Observations and Recommendations
Concerning the Stabilization and Restoration of White
Otter Castle for the Friends of White otter Castle",
prepared by Brian S. Thom, on 21 Nov. 1984. The
report includes architectural drawings produced in
1973 by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ontario.

The Golden Gateway Lodge, Fort William, #384,
A.O.L.W, was a mutual aid society concerned primarily
with providing for the welfare of its members through
medical aid, loans, help with labour problems, and
indemnities in loss of death.
