Ladies' Orange Benevolent Association fonds

Administrative history
The Ladies Orange Benevolent Association (Port Arthur Lodge), is for Protestant women unified to preserve and develop Protestantism, the laws and constitution of the Country, the exercise of benevolence and charity, and to minister to the needs of the sick. It exists as an auxiliary of the Loyal Orange Association. Its slogan is "One School, One Flag, and One Language". It strives to uphold the public school system and, according to its constitution, is an anti-Catholic organization.

Scope and Content

One envelope containing copies of the Association's Constitution and by-laws, hymn book, dues book, financial accounts, rental book for meeting hall, passwords, and Ritual book of the Loyal True Blue Association.

The Lakehead Film Society fonds

1967-1971

Administrative history
The Lakehead Film Society was formed in 1967 and held its first meeting on May 23 of that year. The aim of the Society was to bring in art films (foreign films, documentaries) to be viewed by the members as an alternative to the films shown at local cinemas. Films were screened once a month at local high schools. The Lakehead Film Society lasted until 1971, when interest had dropped off and the Society could not afford to bring in any more films.

Nine file folders of records and correspondence, arranged alphabetically according to subject.
1) Bookings: correspondence dealing with the booking films, 1968-1969.
2) Constitution, 1970-1971.
3) Correspondence: miscellaneous letters from the Society to film distributors, 1967-1968.
4) Finances: financial reports, including letters pertaining to disbursements made for various Society business, 1968-1969.
5) Membership: lists of Society members, 1967-1969.

Lakehead Planning Board fonds

Biographical Sketch
The Lakehead Planning Board was formed in 1957, and its office was formerly located at 1081 Barton Street, Balmoral Complex. Its function was to co-ordinate land use planning within the Lakehead Planning Area and provide planning research assistance to member municipalities. They had monthly meetings and appointment was by member councils which included Thunder Bay, Neebing, Shuniah, Paipoonge, Oliver, Gorham and Ware. It dissolved in 1981 due to the pull out by the City of Thunder Bay because of funding and troubles with the labour union. Today the Lakehead Rural Planning Board maintains the records of the Lakehead Planning Board.

Scope and Content
The Lakehead Planning Board Collection is made up of reports, correspondence, agenda, resolutions, minutes, maps, notices and publications regarding the Board and economic development in Thunder Bay and the surrounding area. Includes some photocopied material.

Records relating to the employer/employee relations which include agreements between Board and Union (two unrevised versions and one final), job descriptions, employee appraisal forms (blank), a copy of the Labour Relations Act, a salary schedule, and a report on the staff.

Lord's Day Alliance, Fort William, Port Arthur Branch fonds

Administrative history
The Lord's Day Alliance, Fort William, Port Arthur Branch was formed in 1896 for the purpose of seeing that the Sabbath was observed in the communities according to the law as specified by the Ontario Lord's Day Act. This meant overseeing new legislation and the enforcement of the Act, as well as influencing public opinion. Officers consisted of the president, the vice president, the secretary and the treasurer. The Alliance was run by the officers in conjunction with an executive committee of members and whatever sub-committees were deemed necessary.

Scope and Content
The Lord's Day Alliance records are a collection of minute books, letters, reports, photos, clippings and memos regarding church business, members of the congregation, financial concerns, and local happenings pertaining to the church.

Secretary's minutes, 1896-1907. Also includes the treasurer's account, 1896-1899, and a membership roll, 1896-99. The last five pages contain letters, clippings, and a memo. The inside front cover is pasted a Constitution of the Lord's Day Alliance, dated 1895. The secretary minutes are 45 pages long.

Seven letters and one telegram to and from the Local Lord's Day Alliance dated 1905, 1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1913 concerning the various activities of the organization, arranged chronologically.

Mission to Seamen fonds

Administrative history
The Anglican Church's Mission to Seamen, is represented in ten port cities in Canada. There is one missionary in each port, to take care of the spiritual needs of sailors in port from all countries and religions. The port missionary or chaplain also acts as a tour guide, social convenor and sports director as the occasion demands. Thunder Bay has had an Anglican port chaplain since 1962. The chaplain visits each ocean going ship that is in port and offers to arrange services or take crews to churches of their choice. Also he arranges for telephone connections overseas on behalf of the sailors.

The Moral and Social Reform Council of Fort William fonds

Administrative history
The Moral and Social Reform Council of Fort William was established on 21 May 1912 to promote social and moral reform through education, legislation, and administrative action. Elected officers were Mr. James Gowanlock (president), Mrs. Gavin (vice president), Dr. Withrow (secretary- treasurer). The meetings were held monthly and the council had two representatives from each church and other sympathetic organizations.

21 May 1912: Decision to organize a council and elect officers.
21 May 1912: Executive meeting of newly elected officers.

27 Aug. 1912: Executive meeting about the dissatisfaction with the police.
11 Feb. 1912: General meeting to establish a plan of attack on houses of "ill repute".
17 Apr. 1913: Review of work up to date.
24 Apr. 1913: Financial business.
26 Sept. 1913: Petition to prevent the peddling of liquor on the streets.
The constitution is located on page 290. The membership roll was located on page 275 but is missing.
