De La Ronde Family fonds

Biographical Sketch
The information in this collection on the de la Ronde family was collected for the most part by Mrs. Ida Schneider who had hopes of claiming the supposed de la Ronde fortune. The collection outlines the family's lineage possibly as far back as 1506. Of local importance, Louis Denis de la Ronde was a clerk and trader for the North West Co. (1818-1821) and the Hudson's Bay Co. (1821-1868) in the Lake Nipigon area. Louis Denis proved to be a survivor during the reorganization of the fur trade in these years.

Sixteen files of Mrs. Ida Schneider compiled during her researches into the history of the De La Ronde Family:
1) Letters regarding the claims of the family plus notes made by Mrs. Schneider and Dr. Elizabeth Arthur.

3) Early family history 1666-1827 including copies of documents: 1666 census of Canada, will of Louise Charier de Lotbiniere, correspondence between Laronde Thibandiere and the French government, 1779-1783.
4) Documents relating to Louise King, including marriage certificate (July 1800), her petition as widow of Louis Denis de la Ronde for a land grant in compensation for her husband's services to the Crown, 1818-1824.
5) Documents relating to Charles Francois Denis de la Ronde, 1763-1840, including a transcript of his will (1840), birth and baptism records (1763), and other legal papers. Also includes Mrs. Schneider's notes relating to the Laronde house in Penetanguishene.
6) Documents relating to Louis de la Ronde of Lake Nipigon, including a copy of his will (1860) and notes.

13) Correspondence regarding family history, primarily revealing family suspicions that they had been cheated out of a fortune than any genuine historical research.
14) Correspondence with descendants of the de la Ronde family and with Rose Gualtieri, 1954, 1963-1964.
15) Research of E. Bacon Vaughan, genealogist including correspondence with family descendants.
16) Transcripts of items from National Archives of Canada including lists of Indian trade passes (1783) and the 1837 accounts with Charles Laronde.

Additional Information
Custodial History - Mrs. Ida Schneider turned over these records to Dr. Elizabeth Arthur, professor of history at Lakehead University who later deposited them with the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society. A number of the documents are from various Provincial and National archives (indicated on documents).

Biographical Sketch
George S. Dennis, a former CPR employee, collects things relating to the era when steam was used for locomotives on Canadian railways.

Scope and Content
Series A 56/1/1 - videotape
A compilation video tape entitled "When Steam was King". Includes amateur films by George Dennis taken during the 1940s and 1950s. Shows the various types of locomotives, cars, stations, towns and people who served on the line. Some are in colour while others are in black and white and the video tape is narrated by George S. Dennis. The films were transferred to video tape in 1988.

Keith Denis Collection

Biographical Sketch
Keith Denis (1909-1979) was a President of the Thunder Bay Historical Society from 1961-1969 and a long-time collector of historical information and writer of history. He worked at the Workman's Compensation Board in his later years but also worked on construction and mining projects and as a salesman. He was a noted naturalist and conservationist and served as President of the Northwestern Ontario Conservation Federation. He was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Lakehead Philatelic Society, the National Exhibition Centre and managed the Port Arthur Tourist Bureau.

Scope and Content
The Keith Denis Collection is composed of six series dealing with his interests in Thunder Bay's history, in particular its 19th century history. Contains mainly research files, ephemera, publications, and some of the records of his business from 1937-1944 selling orange juice.

Andrew Dick Papers

1888-1905

Biographical Sketch
Andrew Dick (1831-1917) probably lived on Caribou Island, near Rossport. He had at least ten children between 1863 and 1884 when his wife died. He possibly had six to eight more children by another marriage. Dick was a fisherman by trade and cared for the lighthouse at Point Porphyry.

William Currie Dobie fonds

Biographical Sketch
W.C. Dobie (1839-1929) was federal fisheries inspector for Western Lake Superior region, police magistrate, and justice of the peace. He was born in Liverpool in 1839, came to York Township in Ontario in 1849 and grew up in Bruce Mines. In 1865 he married Sarah Dorothy Coatsworth of Missouri. She was daughter of J. Coatsworth, manager of the Montreal Mining and Lands Co. and postmaster at Bruce Mines, Ontario. Dobie came to Prince Arthur's Landing in 1872 to work as a bookkeeper for Thomas Marks and Co. and in 1884 formed a general store of his own in partnership with John Hasking. In 1887 he entered into partnership with George Marks and H.A. Wiley to form W.C. Dobie and Co. He then purchased the interests of his partners and, in 1894, disposed of his business to his son, J.C. Dobie, who amalgamated it with other businesses to form the Marks, Clavet and Dobie Co. William served on the Shuniah Council for five years before 1884 and was a member of the school board for 30 years. He was at one time Dominion Inspector of mines. He served as magistrate for 32 years from 1890 to 1922. His first wife died in 1879 and he remarried in 1887 or 1888 to Mary ? who left him shortly thereafter. Dobie died in 1929.

Letter press copy book of outgoing correspondence of W.C. Dobie. Most of the entries pertain to his activities as fishery overseer, but some are of a personal nature regarding politics and his attempts to get his estranged wife, Mary, to return to him.

James D. Doty fonds

Biographical Sketch
James D. Doty, politician and speculator was born in Salem, Washington County, New York in 1799 and died in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1865. He began practicing law at Detroit, Michigan Territory in 1819 and in 1823 became a judge of the judicial district of Northern Michigan. He became Wisconsin's delegate to Congress in 1839 and served until 1841. After Wisconsin achieved statehood, Doty served as a representative in Congress from 1849 to 1853. He had much interest in the Indian tribes of the Michigan and Wisconsin areas.

2) Collection of notes written by Doty on the history of the Indians of central America with comparative notes on the indigenous peoples of North America. Also included are notes on the development of the fur trade in the Michigan territory (47 fol), undated.
3) Notes for the preparation of an English/French/Indian dictionary. Includes single words and common phrases which would be used in connection with travels in the wilderness areas of Michigan Territory and the fur trade. Includes references to nine Indian languages. Table of contents. Undated (89 fol.).
4) Doty's Journal (pages 28-35, 54-83, 86-155) and Commonplace Book. Bound in spiral binder. Primarily concerns the Indian tribes of the Great Lakes area from Lake Superior to Lake Michigan, c.1828-1929.

Walter MacKay Draycott fonds

Biographical Sketch
Mr. Walter MacKay Draycott was born 1883 in England and emigrated to Canada and Fort William in 1907. He left for Vancouver in 1912. Mr. Draycott died in Vancouver in 1989 or 1990.

Manuscript of Walter MacKay Draycott written in the third person by Mr. Draycott himself using his memory and exerpts from his diary. Typed and edited by Mr. Robert Brown of North Vancouver, a member of the North Shore Historical Society, for possible publication. The manuscript concerns Mr. Draycott's early life to about the first World War. The manuscript is incomplete.

G.R. Duncan fonds

Biographical Sketch
Mr. G.R. Duncan was born in Ottawa on 7 Feb. 1878 and died around 1941 or 1942. He studied engineering at McGill University at the beginning of the twentieth century then moved to Fort William in order to direct the building of a plant for the Canada Iron Corporation. Duncan became involved with a real estate and insurance company and later purchased it calling it the G.R.Duncan and Company Limited. This company then went on to become an important business in Fort William and northern Ontario. Among its more famous business deals are the "Industrial Spur" a large block of land bounded by Mary, Sprague and Christine streets and Syndicate Avenue which developed into a large business area in Fort William and "Duncan's Union Centre", which is property bought from the Honorable Clifford Sifton. This property was between the two cities on May Street. His main interests in life were real estate developments, mining in northwestern Ontario and other parts of Canada, and industrial promotion in Fort William and Port Arthur.

The G.R. Duncan Papers are composed of nine series and include mostly records relating to Mr. Duncan's business interests in the fields of real estate and insurance. Also included are municipal records which related to Duncan's business interests, speeches which he gave at various venues and material relating to a number of organizations to which he belonged. The last series is a record from the G.R. Duncan Real Estate and Insurance Co. Ltd..

Manion; a list of local industries exempt from taxation; a report of a meeting to discuss building depression (1921); a speech by Harry James; Fort William City Treasurer on the city's finances (1920); report on the feasibility of building a trunkroad to Winnipeg (1919), and promotional literature.
Series A 55/9/1 - Real Estate Holdings Account Book - 4 cm. - 1910-1935
A bound volume describing the value, changes of ownership, tax status, legal status and size of real estate holdings by G.R.Duncan Real Estate and Insurance Co. and its customers. It is arranged alphabetically by owner or location, contains some legal agreements and maps, and deals largely in industrial land and waterfront property.

Gertrude Dyke fonds

Biographical Sketch
Gertrude Dyke was a prominent citizen of Port Arthur (where she was born) and had a great interest in local history. She published three historic booklets: "Historic Lakehead", "Historic Silver Islet", and "Historic Stories". She was the wife of John A. Dyke and daughter of Thomas A. Woodside.

Scope and Content
The Gertrude Dyke fonds includes speeches, addresses, manuscripts, correspondences and notes regarding the history of Northwestern Ontario including pioneer women, local churches, Silver Islet, and the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society. All documents were produced in Thunder Bay and Fort William.

John A. Dyke fonds

Biographical Sketch
John A. Dyke, son of Rev. Joshua A. Dyke (mayor of Fort William in 1902 and 1903, Methodist minister and businessman), was a prominent Fort William lawyer in the firm of Dyke and Beeman and later on his own. He started practice in ca.1906 and retired in ca.1949. Died ca.1955. Married Gertrude (history writer).

Scope and Content
The John A. Dyke papers form three series including material of his own (speeches and addresses) and that he has collected from other sources.
Series A 49/1/1 - Notebook - 1 cm. - 1876-1881
One handwritten notebook produced by Sophy Fox, possibly of Chatham, containing notes on history, poetry, art, theatre and luminaries of the day in the fields of politics and literature. Book appears to have been started in 1876 and the last date mentioned is 1881. This seems to be a collection of notes kept by the author on her readings.

Speeches and addresses delivered by John A. Dyke to various organizations at the Lakehead. Most often his topic was on the legal system in Canada.
