Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society

Programs &
Special Events

Programming has always been a critical part of what the Thunder Bay Museum offers the public. Our lecture series began in 1908 and continues today, and a host of special events - teas, receptions, dinners, and exhibit openings, to name just a few - cater to people of all ages and tastes.

Much of the Museum's programming involves school children. More than a dozen suitcase kits produced by the Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society have travelled throughout the public school system. In-Museum programs, designed to complement the Ontario curriculum introduce students to the fascinating heritage of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario.

In a typical year, as many as 120 classes representing as many as 4,000 students will visit the Museum, and hundreds more will take advantage of recreational programs offered during the summer, on P.A. Days and on holidays.

Specialevents that occur annually include our Presidents' Reception, Taste of History Dinner, Victorian Tea, Antiques Show and Sale, Haunted Halls, and Open House. In addition, the Museum has offered an Antiques Appraisal Road Show, providing monetary appraisals of antiques and collectibles.

To cater to those unable to visit our building, the Museum operates outreach programs and special displays in schools, shopping malls, trade shows, senior's homes, and elsewhere. These are seen and enjoyed by thousands.

Guides, Brownies, Cubs and other organizations are encouraged to book special visits to the Museum during evenings (subject to availability). Just give us a call at 623-0801 a few weeks prior to your visit to reserve a time.
