The hula hoop as we know it today has been around for thousands of years. Throughout history people have been playing with hula hoops. First Nation Hoop Dance is a form of storytelling and have been using hoops for thousands of years. Original hula hoops were made from rattan, stiff grass, willow, or grapevines. The hula hoop of today is made from PVC piping. Hula hooping was also used as a form of exercise throughout the centuries, including in this day in age.
