Quarantines were the answer to any contagious diseases for which there was no cure. Polio was one of them, but others included smallpox, diphtheria, tuberculosis, scarlet fever and measles. Big signs were posted on people’s houses and nobody was allowed in or out until the threat had passed. It wasn’t until vaccines and antibiotics were discovered that quarantines became a thing of the past. The photos below are copies of the originals.
