Help us preserve a local landmark!
The historic carronade displayed in front of the Thunder Bay Museum has long served as a striking and symbolic feature of our site. However, decades of exposure to the elements have taken their toll — especially on the wooden carriage, which is now visibly deteriorating and in urgent need of restoration.
We are seeking:
- Volunteers or local organizations — skilled woodworkers, heritage carpenters, trades programs, or community groups — to take on the restoration project, ideally donating their labour
- The Museum will cover the cost of materials
- The project should retain the carronade’s historical integrity while improving its structural stability and weather resistance
What’s needed:
- Fabrication and replacement of the wooden carriage using historically appropriate methods
- Assessment and reinforcement of metal hardware and mountings
- Removal of paint spatter on metal wheel
- Application of protective finishes
- Optional: documentation of the restoration process for educational or interpretive use
