The Thunder Bay Museum is seeking an Exhibits Intern to join our team for a 12-month contract. In this role, you will use your expert communication skills to develop exhibits of varying scales with the guidance and supervision of the Museum’s curatorial staff.

Duration: 8 to 14 weeks, 35 hours per week
Wage: $15.50/hour

The Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society seeks to hire a student to assist with both youth (6 to 12 years) and senior (65+ years) education programs. The student will deliver programming to people in the Senior Living Centres/ Retirement or Long-Term Care Homes, as well as education programs to children at the Museum.

As part of the position the student(s) will also research, develop, implement and evaluate new Senior and Educational programs to be delivered in person or virtually. The programs will tie into the local history of the city of Thunder Bay and the region of Northwestern Ontario as well as follow current Ontario curriculum guidelines or age-related theme-based activities.

The Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society publishes close to 100 articles in local papers over the course of the year. The student will be responsible for researching suitable (and interesting) article topics; selecting topics in cooperation with the Curator/Archivist; and writing articles of 500 to 2500 words in length.

Assisting with cataloging newly donated artifacts and archives to the museum, including photography or digitization, description, historical research. Will also assist with the maintenance of cataloging database records and data entry, as well as with general research inquiries. May assist with artifact inventory or collections re-organizations where needed.

The student will be responsible for the digitization of photographs from the Museum’s extensive collection of 500,000 images. Image formats vary from hardcopy, slides, negatives and positives. Care must be taken in handling of originals during the digitization process.

Assist the Chief Operating Officer with management of the over 300 active members of The Thunder Bay Historical Museum Society. This includes preparation of membership programs, email and telephone communications, event planning, graphic design, newsletter & material distribution, and data entry & maintenance.

Duration: 8 weeks, 35 hours per week

The students will assist with promoting the activities of various departments of the museum through outreach opportunities via social media, special events, and activity booths at community events to educate members and tourists about the history of Thunder Bay. Researching and conducting the museum’s five historical walking tours may also be a component during the summer.

The Community Outreach Assistant will be responsible for performing duties and tasks relating to the roles of Event Booth Attendant, Social Media Content Curator and Visitor Services Liaison. These roles will be largely public facing with the overarching goal of increasing and optimizing the Museum’s presence in, and contributions to the Thunder Bay community, as well as the overall regional heritage and culture sector in Northwestern Ontario.

To assist the Archivist in the processing of archives. This will involve the accessioning, arranging, describing, and shelving of historical documents relating to the history of Northwestern Ontario and the posting of such information to the internet. Training will be provided.

Under the guidance of the Exhibit Curator of the incumbent will be trained on the exhibit development process from early development to installation and take down. This includes: Exhibition Development and Digitizing Existing Exhibit Panels.
