Are you a student looking to gain meaningful, hands-on experience in a museum setting? The Thunder Bay Museum offers placement and practicum opportunities for students in a variety of fields, including history, archaeology, education, media, and museum studies.
Working with us means more than just getting credit — it means contributing to a team that is passionate about heritage, community engagement, and storytelling.
We welcome students from programs such as:
- Public history, anthropology, or Indigenous studies
- Museum studies, archival science, or library tech
- Education and early childhood education
- Communications, graphic design, or media production
- Business, fundraising, or non-profit management
Opportunities may include:
- Exhibit and collections support
- Archival processing and digitization
- Event planning and visitor engagement
- Social media, design, and video production
- Educational programming or outreach initiatives
Placements are typically unpaid and arranged through a formal agreement with your educational institution, either for credit or co-op. Whenever possible, we provide mentorship, resume support, and portfolio-building experience.
We are especially eager to support:
- Indigenous and racialized students
- Students in Northern Ontario institutions
- Programs focused on accessibility, equity, and inclusion in cultural institutions
