Dr. Michel S. Beaulieu, PhD, FRHistS is Provost and Vice-President Academic at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) and a Professor in the Department of History. Prior to his appointment as Provost at UNBC, Michel served as Lakehead University’s Associate Vice-Provost (Academic), was a full Professor of History, and held numerous leadership roles at Lakehead, including Chair of the Department of History.
An internationally recognized scholar, Michel holds academic appointments at the University of Oulu and the University of Helsinki, Finland. His research and publications generally focus on various aspects of the economic, political, and social history of Northern Ontario. He also has extensive experience in not-for-profit board leadership and governance, with a strong track record of guiding organizations through strategic decision-making, fostering organizational and fiscal accountability, and ensuring effective community engagement and collaboration. He has served on the board of directors and acted as an advisor for several regional, provincial, national, and international organizations.
Michel’s professional and community work has been recognized by several honours and awards. These include the King Charles III Coronation Medal, the Ontario Historical Society’s Cruickshank Gold Medal, the City of Thunder Bay’s Spirit of Thunder Bay Award, and the City of Thunder Bay Heritage Award. A Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, he also serves as the Honorary Colonel of the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment.
In addition to being a past-President of the Society, Michel is the co-editor of the Society’s journal Papers & Records and Chair of the Publications committee.
