Toy Iron

Toy sad iron and trivet 1895 circa

Toy version of the sad iron and trivet. They were called “sad” irons because of their weight. In the early 1800s, “sad” meant “heavy.” The average weight of a non-toy sad iron was 15 pounds. In the 1800s and 1900s, everyday clothing (made of linen or cotton) required very heavy pressing.
