Gedo’s Hammer, Baba’s Borscht
Raising a Family in Current River
1929 – 1989
Ivan (“Gedo”) and Annie (“Baba”) Rusnak were two immigrants from the Ukraine who met, married, and raised a family in the Current River Community of Port Arthur from 1929 to 1989. Ivan built several homes in the Current River area over his lifetime and Annie was remembered for the Ukrainian food she prepared for her family, notably, “Baba’s Borscht”.
Included are Ivan and Annie’s taped stories and memories of what it was like living in Current River in the 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s.
We travel back in time to when Fort William, Port Arthur, and Current River had their beginnings, and later, when they amalgamated to become the City of Thunder Bay.
Also described are Annie and Ivan’s attempts to keep their Ukrainian language, traditions, and customs alive for their family.
For those who enjoy or would like to learn how to make Ukrainian food, a few Ukrainian recipes have been added that Annie would make for the family.
